India as Potentially Being one of the Top Cloud Computing Markets in 2018 for Amazon.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a Market leader in Cloud Computing Services space, sees India as potentially being one of the top Markets for the firm in 2018. 


Amazon has reported a surge in earnings from its cloud computing business in India; this indicates the company’s efforts to focus on cloud segment are leading to increased cloud adoption and revenue generation.

Amazon Internet Services is the re-seller for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in India and was incorporated in November 2011. 

Amazon Internet Services added $99 million in revenue in 2017 with revenue from continuing operations of the American e-commerce and cloud computing company growing to $406 million in December 2017 from $307 million a year earlier.

Amazon Data Services, Amazon’s subsidiaries which is a data processing and hosting entity was set up in India in June 2016, reported revenue of $ 36.5 million and a profit of $3.5 million profit for 2016-17.  Amazon Data Services received a funding of $207.5 million in November 2016 from its parent company. 

Amazon IT Services, Amazon's software consulting business has received a capital infusion of $40 million in January this year this is in addition to $30 million funding it had received in the previous year from its parent company. 

Globally, AWS is fast becoming the biggest money-making business for Amazon. 

The company reported $5.1 billion in revenue for AWS in the fourth quarter of 2017, as per reports.

The key drivers for this in India are:

- Amazon feels an Increased ease of doing business in India.

- Growing number of skilled technology workforce both in colleges and in the professional skill space.

- The size of the Indian Market - it's a huge business.

- The recent trend - India is trying to enable Technology Innovation, welcoming companies like Amazon.

- It's already a growth story for AWS which saw a 60% surge in customers after setting up its Data Centers or availability zones in the Mumbai Region in June last year and now has over 1.2 lakh Customers. 

- Amazon feels  "Indian customers have been very vocal and very helpful in providing Customer Feedback on what they would like to see a change in the services, much of which has influenced what we have ended up building."

- Thousands of Indian Customers were already using AWS outside of India. Thus, Amazon is on familiar grounds as far as their knowledge on the Indian Customer Mindset is concerned.

- Andy Jassy, CEO, Amazon Web Services feels “India is a big priority.”

- Amazon - The U.S.-based business giant announced 30 new services across Cloud, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence verticals recently at the Amazon’s re:Invent event.

- Andy Jassy has also said, "Artificial Intelligence would not take away but rather create new and different kind of jobs." this is bringing back confidence in the workforce currently reeling under the fear of AI taking over their jobs, this is a big thumbs-up.

- Amazon has hired a few hundred thousand people in the last 3-4 years. This instills confidence in both the Company and its Technology.

- Amazon has always said "There are tonnes of jobs and we don’t have enough people to do those… it not just a U.S. problem, but a world problem." This sets the tone and vision of the company in the right perspective - always looking for top talent.

- AWS also recently announced partnerships with Walt Disney Company, Expedia, and National Football League.

 - “India’s Public Cloud Market is estimated to be $2.6 billion in 2018 and over $4 billion by 2020,” Akash Ambani said at the India Digital Open Summit in Mumbai.

- Research firm Gartner Inc had estimated the Public Cloud Services Market in India at $1.81 billion in 2017. 

According to the TechSci Research report “India Cloud Computing Market Forecast and Opportunities, 2020”, the cloud services market in India is forecast to grow at over a CAGR of 22% by 2020.


- Rising availability of Cloud Services at economical price models and the ease of implementation are the major growth drivers for Cloud Services in India. 

- Increased government spending on new e-governance projects based on Cloud Technology is likely to drive the market for Cloud Computing Services in India in 2018-19.

Established tech giant like Microsoft has been the first Cloud service provider with a full range of offerings that include SaaS and PaaS, in addition to IaaS delivered from local data centers in India. Microsoft offers its complete cloud services—Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online—from local data centers. Hence both the Indian customer has seen the range of product offerings in the cloud market sector. Amazon, for sure, has a stiff competitor in place in India mainly from Microsoft and IBM.
